Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article About Montel Williams And Chiropractic

TV Celebrety Host Promotes Chiropractic for MS

A nationally known television celebrity was in the news recently raving about the results of a Chiropractic adjustment that has drastically changed his life for the better. The celebrity, Montel Williams, is a nationally known TV host who has been suffering from the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for many years. In 1999 he went public with the fact that he was a victim of the disease and since has become a spokesman and advocate for people with MS and MS issues.  On a recent Montel Williams Show, he presented some very interesting information about a Chiropractic cervical adjustment he’d experienced only 12 days before. It was obvious to all of his viewers that the Chiropractic work had gone very well and that his life was immediately changed by the results.  Here is what Montel said on the show regarding his condition and his treatment success: “I’m not certain because I haven’t done the scientific research on it to know if this can work for everybody else out there, but I want to tell you I suffer from MS. I have extreme neuralgic pain in the lower extremities; I’m in pain 24 hours a day seven days a week, 365 days a year, and then I go to see this doctor (Dr. Patrick Kerr D.C.). I’ve had pain in my feet. I’ve struggled with my balance, so Dr. Erica (Schwartz, an M.D. and patient advocate who appeared on the show) sent me to see (Dr. Kerr) 12 days ago. “There’s not a person that knows me who will not confirm this, if you just ask them, everybody who sees me. I am walking differently, my pain is less, I have already regained strength in my left leg, my left leg has dropped because I found out that my pelvis was tilted, it’s dropped back down, they are now the same length. It’s the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me. “Dr. Kerr has his practice in New York City. He is a graduate of Life Chiropractic College. “The goal of all Chiropractic care is to reduce pressure on the nerves, thereby allowing the body to function normally – without pain,” Dr. Kerr said during the broadcast. It’s going to be most interesting to learn more about Montel’s condition and his continued developments during the next several months. He will likely continue on his path of improvement and recovery from his condition for some time. It will also be interesting to see if the symptoms of his MS continue to abate and if, in reality, he truly had MS or simply a cervical subluxation (partial dislocation of a vertebra in the neck region) that was indeed the cause of his long-term condition Source: Chiropractic News. Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article About Chiropractic Reducing Blood Pressure

VERTEBRAL ADJUSTMENT LOWERS BLOOD PRESSURE!

The apparent dangers of high blood pressure and the frequent recommendation of prescription drugs to reduce the problem create a seemingly constant flood of both media warnings and advertising. Now, the results of a recent study could shed an entirely different light on the source of the problem.

A study recently concluded in Chicago found that a one-time Chiropractic adjustment could produce a quite dramatic blood pressure reduction. The decrease in pressure was equal to a person taking two blood pressure reducing drugs at the same time. Fifty persons were selected for the study. The requirements to participate were a high blood pressure condition and a  misalignment of the Atlas vertebra. The Atlas is the top vertebra, the highest one in the body, located at the top of the neck.

George Bakris, MD, is the director of the hypertension (high blood pressure) center at the University of Chicago Medical Center and served as the lead author of the study. He pointed out that the Atlas, unlike the rest of the vertebrae in the body, relies only on soft tissue (muscles and ligaments) to hold it in place. For this reason, displacement can occur without pain, so misalignment often goes undetected and untreated.

Patients for the study were all treated by a Chicago area Doctor of Chiropractic. Prior to treatment he performed a variety of tests, including X-rays, to determine the exact adjustment needed for each patient. The subjects were then divided into two groups. Half received an actual adjustment while the other half received a very similar “sham adjustment.” Each participant was fully assessed after their alignment and at the end of 8 weeks.

The study authors said those receiving the actual adjustment had their blood pressure lowered by the amount of someone taking two different blood pressure-lowering drugs at the same time. The reduction continued through the 8 week period of the test. No significant heart rate change was noted in this group.

Why blood pressure changes occurred to this degree was beyond the scope of the study. “The mechanism as to why this improvement in blood pressure occurs is unknown and cannot be determined by this study,” they said. More study is needed to see exactly how a misaligned Atlas might cause hypertension. Also, more work is needed to see if an incorrectly aligned Atlas is an additional risk factor for the development of hypertension.”

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article On Chiropractic Helping A Baseball Pitcher

CHIROPRACTIC HELPS PITCHER TO STARDOM

Just one year ago, baseball pitcher Cole Hamels was on his team’s disabled list and sat out the entire month of September with injuries. Now, this same pitcher is the celebrated winner of the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the World Series while leading his team to a World Championship.

Hamels is a pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies. Toward the end of the 2007 season, he developed elbow problems that were severe enough to keep him on the sidelines. Earlier in his career he’d also suffered from knee and hip concerns and had been helped through these problems with Chiropractic care.

Prior to the start of the 2008 season, Hamels went to the Phillies front office with a request. He wanted the organization to provide the services of a chiropractor to himself and his team while they were at home in Philadelphia. And, he took his request one step further. He wanted the Phillies to provide for his Chiropractic care while the team was on the road and playing in many different cities around the country.

When the team agreed, Hamels had this to say. “Ever since I’ve used one (a chiropractor) it’s done wonders for me. It’s great that they (team management) is going out of their way to get a network going.” It was April 2008 when he made this comment. At the time he also said that with Chiropractic services fully available, that he felt he could, one day, reach the magic number of becoming a 20 game winner for a season.

Hamels didn’t quite reach the 20 game regular season number this year. He finished the year with an impressive 14-10 record. However, this helped his team to a conference championship and a position in the playoffs, and it was in this portion of the season that a healthy Hamels really began to shine.

His first play-off appearances came against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was the winning pitcher as his team advanced to the next round against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hamels pitched the first game of this series and again came out the winner and the Phillies advanced to the World Series. Hamels also came away with the individual honor of being named the MVP for the League Championship Series.

With this success behind him and his health and confidence booming, Hamels was on the mound for the first game of the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays and won the game. Finally, with the series on the line, Hamels got the call again for the deciding game and was the winning pitcher for that one as well. His performance netted him the coveted MVP award for the 2008 World Series! Hamels post-season performance and his personal 4 victory and 0 loss record in the play-offs will long be remembered.

Unlike the fall of 2007 where he was forced to watch play-off games on television while nursing a sore pitching arm, he was now the toast of the town while making personal television appearances on the likes of the Late Night Show with David Letterman.

It is quite apparent that Hamels’ confidence in Chiropractic and his ability to get involved in taking care of his own health had everything to do with his successful season. Congratulations to Cole Hamels, the Philadelphia Phillies and Chiropractic for a World Championship season.

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article About Back Pack Safety For School Kids

BACKPACK SAFETY IS BACK-TO-SCHOOL ISSUE

Concern over children and their backpacks continues to grow. An article appearing in the September 8, 2003 issue of The Times Herald features this problem by noting “Trudging their way around the school campus or to the bus stop, hunched-over kids could be dealing themselves a lifetime of back pain, experts warn.”

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 6,512 emergency room visits each year result from injuries related to book bags. CPSC also cites the statistic that backpack-related injuries are up 256 percent since 1996. The issue has become so widespread, that the California State Assembly passed legislation that forces school districts to develop ways of reducing the weight of students’ backpacks. Other states are also considering similar legislation.

In an online survey conducted last year of more than 200 chiropractors responding from across North America at www.backpacksafe.com, it was learned that:

  • 89 percent of chiropractors surveyed responded that they have seen patients (ages 5-18) reporting back, neck or shoulder pain caused by heavy backpacks.
  • 71 percent of chiropractors presently seeing such patients responded that they are currently seeing one to four patients (ages 5-18) reporting back, neck or shoulder pain caused by heavy backpacks.
  • 20 percent of chiropractors presently seeing such patients responded that they are currently seeing five to nine patients (ages 5-18) reporting back, neck or shoulder pain caused by heavy backpacks.
  • 9 percent of chiropractors presently seeing such patients responded that they are currently seeing 10 or more patients (ages 5-18) due to back, neck or shoulder caused by heavy backpacks.

The American Chiropractic Association has offered the following tips to help prevent backpack problems in school children. Those tips include:

  • Make sure your child’s backpack weighs no more than 5 to 10 percent of his or her body weight.
  • The backpack should never hang more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Urge your child to wear both shoulder straps, and wide, padded straps are very important.
  • The shoulder straps should be adjustable so the backpack can be fitted to your child’s body.

The over-packing of backpacks was featured in a recent study conducted in Italy. In this study it was found that the average child carries a backpack that would be the equivalent of a 39-pound burden for a 176-pound man, or a 29-pound load for a 132-pound woman.

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article About Chiropractic And Immune Function

CHIROPRACTIC AND IMMUNE FUNCTION, A LITERATURE REVIEW

An article in the September 30, 2008 issue of the scientific periodical, the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research reviewed multiple previous studies to correlate the effect chiropractic care has on the immune system. The article goes into detail explaining the numerous scientifically shown connections between the function of the nervous system and the immune system.

The study authors report that, “Recently the focus of science has shifted from viewing the nervous and immune systems as separate entities to recognizing that the brain utilizes specific pathways to the immune system for the purposes of guiding, controlling and modulating the immune response.” In essence, the study authors note that many authorities consider the nervous system and the immune system to be actually one system in the body.

The article documents that many connections between the nervous system and every aspect of the immune system, including discoveries made back in 1945 when it was noted that even the bone marrow, which creates important cells for immunity, has a rich and vast nerve system supply.

Study authors note that nervous system dysfunction can cause immune system dysfunction.  This is the avenue that allows chiropractic to have a significant impact on immunity. They note, “Subluxations are disturbances in the nervous system, which can cause increased or decreased activity of the sympathetic nervous system.” They added, “Chiropractic adjustments correct subluxations which are disturbances in the nervous system.”

By describing in detail the various mechanisms the nervous system controls and coordinates the immune system, the study authors conclude that interference to the nervous system in the form of subluxations will have an adverse effect on immune function. They stated in their conclusion, “The nervous system and the immune system have such a multitude of connections that they could correctly be referred to as a single system. The nervous system senses damage, infectious agents and foreign bodies with the help of chemical releasing immune cells and deals with these problems by deploying different types of immune cells to carry out specific procedures. Disturbances in the nervous system (subluxations) diminish the ability of an individual to sense and repair damage and combat infection, cancer etc. directly, resulting in diminished health.”

In 1976, a new pain reliever hit the market: naproxen. It began to be marketed to arthritis and back pain sufferers as Aleve, Anaproxm, Naprosyn and Naprelan, promising pain-free movement and activity. Aleve could be obtained over the counter, whereas the other formulas were prescription only. The drug is the roduct of and is marketed by Bayer HealthCare. For some time, it has been the pain reliever of choice when a patient has a heart condition.

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article On How Chiropractic Helped A Cyclist Get Back On The Road

COMPETITIVE CYCLIST TAKES TO THE ROAD AGAIN AFTER CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT

When an athlete who competes becomes less able to perform their sport, their entire life is affected. In one case, a chiropractor was able to put a competitive cyclist back in form to compete in very short order.

For five months, the cyclist had not been able to “generate any force,” as he put it. A pain in his lower right spine would start up every time he got on the bike. The problems persisted through his work with a physical therapist, and he had seen an orthopedist who had done an MRI, which showed bulging lumbar disks. For a day or two after working with his physical therapist, he would feel better, but as soon as he stepped onto the bike, the pain and weakness returned in full force. He told the chiropractor that he had not had any injurious incidents that would account for the problem, but that it had come on gradually and then worsened.

The chiropractor noted that the cyclist manifested some signs of a condition that makes a person unable to perform rapid, alternating movements – exactly the kinds of movements a cyclist performs every minute he is on a bicycle!

On examination, the athlete was in great condition, until it came to testing the quadriceps, the large muscles on the front of the thigh. Obviously, these muscles would get a lot of use in cycling! On both sides, these muscles did not show much ability to resist.

The chiropractor found that there were subluxations in the lumbar (lower back) region, the thoracic (upper back) and the cervical (neck areas). After a through adjustment, the athlete allowed for several days to pass while his body rebalanced itself.

After that, the chiropractor said, he “responded as expected,” which means he began to beat all his friends once he took to the road again! He was back to racing competitively again, without any sign of the former pain or weakness!

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares An Article Discussing Importance Of Fitness And Academic Performance

PHYSICALLY FIT STUDENTS DO BETTER ON TESTS

Several articles in Texas reported that children who are physically fit do better academically on standardized tests in their state. One article appearing on the The Dallas Morning News on March 9, 2009 noted that the Texas Education Agency released a study showing that students who are physically fit are more likely to do well on Texas achievement tests and are also less likely to have disciplinary problems.

Also on March 9, the online edition of The Houston Chronicle published an article on this study and quoted state Senator Jane Nelson, who commented, “Now, we have hard evidence that there is a link between fitness and academic success. We need to continue our efforts to decrease these trends as if lives depend on it, because they truly do.”

In the Dallas News story, state Education Commissioner Robert Scott said in a statement, “Texas is the first state to require an annual physical fitness assessment of public school students. Today’s research results show that improving our children’s physical fitness can have positive results not only for the children, but also for the schools as well.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry stated in the Houston Chronicle article, “Our state and nation are struggling with obesity, thanks to the combination of increasingly sedentary lifestyles and the declining quality of diets. We owe it to our children to take the appropriate steps to encourage fitness, steps that are made clearer by the information contained in this first round of testing. I am confident we are on our way to making a difference that will improve and even save lives.

“The study released by the Texas Education Agency can be read here, and noted that, “Students who are physically fit are more likely to do well on the state’s standardized tests and have good school attendance. Fit students are also less likely to have disciplinary referrals.”

In the release by the Texas Education Agency, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, aerobics pioneer and founder of the Cooper Institute stated, “The impact exercise has on the growing brain is unparalleled. Increased exercise improves cardiovascular health, and that helps the brain function more efficiently and enhances its ability to learn.”

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares A Consumer Reports Survey About Chiropractic

ADULTS FAVOR CHIROPRACTIC AS PREFERRED CARE FOR BACK PAIN

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress issued a release published on May 6, 2009 in Earthtimes noting that according to a recent Consumer Reports study, consumers ranked chiropractic highest for relief of back pain. The release noted that Consumer Reports Health Rating Center surveyed over 14,000 people to determine their preferred method of care for back pain. Chiropractic came out the highest with 59% choosing chiropractic.

Gerard W. Clum, D.C., president of Life Chiropractic College West, Hayward, California, and spokesperson for the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, commented, “Individuals who accessed care from a hands-on methods approach, such as chiropractic, expressed the highest satisfaction rates.” Dr. Clum continued, “These people sought relief, having suffered with back pain that undoubtedly interfered with their everyday activities and limited their daily routines, sleep patterns, work responsibilities, and efforts to maintain healthy weight. Chiropractic care provided the help they were looking for.”

The release notes that traditionally, people thought first about drugs or surgery for back ailments. This past misinformation created many problems. “Unfortunately, this lack of information can lead to costly and unnecessary interventions and diagnostic testing by physicians who take an ‘ideological approach’ to back pain,” says Dr. Clum. “It is wise to explore conservative options for pain management once a more serious condition has been ruled out.”

Dr. Clum noted the real value of a study that actually asks consumers their opinion. “The Consumer Reports survey is an example of end-user oriented research,” he says. “As more evidence emerges, we hope that physicians will start to shift from traditional treatment ideology to approaches to back pain that would offer more benefit to patients and avoid medication and surgery whenever and wherever possible.”

It is the hope of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress and Dr. Clum that the previous medical mind-set will shift with this new information. Dr. Clum summed up his feelings by saying, “The traditional, often outdated approaches may lead to unnecessarily expensive and invasive treatment with undesirable results. It is clear that patients now recognize and appreciate the benefits of chiropractic care.”

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares an Article About the Importance of Exercise As You Age

Older Adults Who Burn Calories Daily Increase Their Chances of Living Longer

Here is more good news for older adults who get regular exercise in the course of living. Persons who include calorie-burning activities in their daily life reduce their risk of death over those who chose a more sedentary life style.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health recently sponsored a study that involved 302 older adults aged 70 to 82 years old. Researchers worked extensively with this group for 2 weeks to determine how many calories they burned in the course of conducting their daily activities. This calorie-burning activity was dubbed “free-living energy expenditure.”

Some six years after the original test, the researchers got back into contact with participants while collecting mortality figures at the same time. While 58 of the original participants tested in 1998 were no longer living, the rest were still available to provide results in 2006. The results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The best news to come out of this study was that death rate decreased as daily energy expenditure increased. For purpose of analysis, it was found that the persons in the highest third of the study in terms of calories burned had a 69 percent lower risk of death than those in the lowest third of the group in terms of energy expended. Specifically, it was estimated that for every 287 calories burned per day, an individual reduced their mortality risk by 30 percent.

It was interesting, according to researchers, that no single activity was sited as most significant in terms of results. Doing any kind of activity–be it walking, climbing stairs, engaging in high-intensity exercise or doing house work – all helped to burn calories and reduce mortality.

“Our study suggests that any activity energy expenditure in older adults can help lower mortality risks,” said the study authors. “Efforts to increase or maintain free-living activity energy expenditure will likely improve the health of older adults.”

Therefore, persons who have no strong interest or ability to participate in an exercise program can still benefit from the activity of moving about in the course of living. This may be bad news for health clubs trying to sell memberships to seniors, but it’s good news for anyone who has a willingness to get up and about in the course of daily living. Any exercise that burns calories can be beneficial.

Santa Rosa Chiropractor Shares Article About Safety of Chiropractic

Study Demonstrates Chiropractic Does Not Increase Risk of Stroke

A research report published in Spine journal confirms what chiropractors have said for years: chiropractic care does NOT cause an increased risk of strokes due to arterial dissection. “We didn’t see any increased association between chiropractic care and usual family physician care, and the stroke,” said researcher Frank Silver, professor of medicine at the University of Toronto and director of the University Health Network stroke program. “The association occurs because patients tend to seek care when they’re having neck pain or headache, and sometimes they go to a chiropractor, sometimes they go to a physician. But we didn’t see an increased likelihood of them having this type of stroke after seeing a chiropractor.”  Neck pain and headache are the symptoms people get during the initial phase of this kind of stroke.

During the past several years, chiropractic has come under intense attack by anti-chiropractic organizations, including several that claim to represent chiropractic “victims.” Despite a wealth of evidence to the contrary – including a 2001 study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal that the risk of suffering a stroke due to chiropractic adjustments was less than one in nearly 6 million — critics have kept up their attacks and tried to persuade the public that chiropractic adjustments were dangerous.

For this latest project, a Canadian research team studied nine years of patient data and found that, of the 818 cases involving this kind of stroke, patients were just as likely to have visited their family medical doctor as they did a chiropractor. There was no increased risk from having received chiropractic care.

Dr. Silver admitted that he and his team were specifically looking for an increased association between chiropractic care and stroke but found none. According to the report’s conclusion, “The increased risks of VBA stroke associated with chiropractic and PCP visits is likely due to patients with headache and neck pain from VBA dissection seeking care before their stroke.

We found no evidence of excess risk of VBA stroke associated chiropractic care compared to primary care.”
